On the 18th of January 2025, the Auditorium of Ruwanpura National College of Education hosted a highly insightful session on the topic, “Role of a Teacher in Empowering Civil Society.” The event, held from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, was attended by 2nd-year and 1st-year prospective teachers alongside lecturers, all eager to explore the vital contributions of teachers to civil society.
Under the esteemed supervision of Madam President A.H.T Thakshila Jayamini, the session featured a special lecture by Mr. Mohamed Mahees from the Department of Sociology, University of Colombo. Mr. Mahees shared his extensive knowledge and experience, offering valuable insights into how educators can inspire civic responsibility, foster critical thinking, and contribute to the development of a more equitable and engaged society.
The session was coordinated by PAFFREL, an organization renowned for its dedication to promoting democracy and good governance, further enriching the discussion with practical examples and a broader societal perspective.
The program was a resounding success, emphasizing the transformative power of education and the teacher’s pivotal role in shaping a more informed and active civil society. It left participants inspired to embrace their future roles with renewed commitment and purpose.
